By PJ Solar Cleaning & Bird Proofing
Proper solar bird proofing uses mesh and fasteners selected for the system, fitted carefully around the array. Our photo shows the kind of work homeowners should ask to see: purpose-built black mesh and clips that secure the barrier without drilling new holes into the panel frames. The workmanship should be visible in the details.

First photo: PJ Solar’s example of proper mesh and clips. Second photo: chicken-wire-style netting found on a different property. Compare the materials and attachment approach.
Start with the attachment points
Look closely at the clips along the panel edge in our example. Those connection points matter. A contractor should be able to identify the fastener, explain how it works with your frame and show the completed attachment in a clear photograph.
The chicken-wire-style installation in the comparison photo came from a different customer’s property. We identified drilled attachments while there for cleaning. We are sharing the contrast because many homeowners never get a close look at what someone installed above their heads.
Five questions to ask your installer
You do not need to become a bird-proofing specialist to ask for a clear scope. These five questions help you understand the work before agreeing to an estimate:
- What mesh and clip products will you use, and why do they fit my system?
- Will the barrier attach without drilling new holes into the panel frames?
- How will you close corners, ends and changes in the roof profile?
- What cleanup, inspection and completion photographs are included?
- How will the installation allow future service, and what maintenance is required?
Ask for photographs that show more than the best-looking straight edge. Corners, joints and the ends of each separate array deserve attention. A carefully installed barrier needs to address all intended entry points while preserving drainage, airflow and access for service.
Use materials made for the application
PJ Solar uses Bird-B-Gone solar mesh and compatible clips as part of our installation approach. Product choice is followed by careful fitting. Simply buying the correct roll does not finish the job; the installer still has to account for your roof and panel arrangement.
Canadian Solar’s mounting instructions require “appropriate corrosion-proof fastening materials.” Its manual also addresses the installation methods permitted for its modules. That illustrates why product compatibility and workmanship belong in the discussion whenever someone adds equipment around solar panels.
Keep caring for the system after installation
Bird proofing does not make solar maintenance-free. Continue cleaning and inspections based on your equipment instructions and property conditions. Check for loosened sections, new openings and debris accumulation, especially after roof work, panel additions or other service around the array. Have a professional perform roof-level checks.
At PJ Solar, our five-year bird-proofing labor warranty requires annual cleaning and inspection by PJ Solar. That is our workmanship warranty, separate from the panel manufacturer’s warranty. Regular visits let us review the barrier and the condition around the array together.
Ask PJ Solar to show you the difference
We serve homeowners across the High Desert, Inland Empire and other Southern California communities, with selected Arizona and Nevada service areas. Tell us your location and what you are seeing around your panels. We will arrange an on-site estimate and explain the proposed work before installation.
