PJ Solar

Some jobs show exactly why solar panel bird proofing needs to be done right. This Victorville home was one of the worst pigeon cleanup jobs we have handled in years.

The property had dealt with a pigeon problem for more than ten years. Under the solar panels, droppings, nests, feathers and other debris had built up into a thick layer across the tile roof. By the time our two-day job was complete, we had removed approximately 28 bags of material. From handling those bags, PJ estimates the total at 1,400–1,500 pounds; the material was not weighed.

This was far beyond washing the glass on top of the panels. We had to get underneath the system and deal with what had been collecting out of sight.

Why the Previous Bird Proofing Failed

The panels already had wire around them, but pigeons were still getting underneath.

We found uncoated half-inch wire mesh with loose sections that left openings for birds. According to PJ, the remaining wire also held waste back while the openings continued to let pigeons in. The result was a barrier that failed to exclude the birds and made the buildup worse.

That is an important distinction for homeowners: seeing wire around a solar array does not tell you whether the installation is doing its job. On this property, the loose sections were the weak points.

Day One: Lifting the Panels and Clearing the Buildup

On the first day, we lifted panels to reach the material underneath and removed the bulk of the accumulation.

The buildup extended across the roof beneath the array, around mounting rails and near the system’s wiring.

Cleaning the visible panel surfaces alone would have left this material in place. The work needed to address the space underneath as well.

Day Two: Finishing the Cleanup and Installing Mesh

We returned the next day to finish removing the remaining waste and debris. We then put the panels back, installed the replacement mesh and cleaned the panels.

The job required two days because of the extent of the buildup and the work needed to reach it. That is the actual timeline for this property, rather than a standard promise for every bird-proofing job.

Cleanup and exclusion were both part of the solution: remove the existing accumulation, then address the openings that had allowed birds underneath.

What Victorville Homeowners Can Learn From This Job

If pigeons keep returning to your solar panels even though wire is already installed, have the installation checked. Loose sections and openings deserve attention. The barrier needs to fit the actual roof and panel layout, including the contours of a tile roof.

A photograph from the ground cannot show everything underneath the array. This project is an example of how extensive the concealed buildup can become over time.

At PJ Solar, our bird-proofing work uses Bird-B-Gone mesh and clips. We also explain the maintenance that follows installation. Our five-year bird-proofing labor warranty requires annual cleaning and inspection so we can check the condition of the barrier.
