Does Rain Really Clean Solar Panels?
After a rainstorm, your solar panels may look cleaner from the ground. But rain is not the same as a professional cleaning. Rain can rinse away loose dust, while bird droppings, sticky grime and other buildup can remain on the glass. When the panels dry, streaks and residue may still be visible.
At PJ Solar Cleaning & Bird Proofing, we hear it all the time: “I’m waiting for the rain.” Our answer is simple: rain is weather, not a maintenance plan.
Why Do Solar Panels Look Dirty After Rain?
Dust, pollen, windblown dirt and bird droppings collect on solar panels between storms. Rain may move some of that dirt around rather than removing all of it. If the panels are visibly dirty after drying, they may need professional attention.
How Often Should You Clean Solar Panels in Southern California?
PJ Solar generally recommends checking panels regularly and considering professional cleaning about every six months, depending on dust, bird activity, nearby trees and local conditions. Homes in the High Desert and Inland Empire may need a different schedule than homes in less dusty areas. Always follow your panel manufacturer’s maintenance instructions.
How PJ Solar Cleans Solar Panels
We use purified deionized (DI) water for solar panel glass cleaning, without harsh chemical detergents. We also look for visible buildup and signs of bird activity around the array. If pigeons are nesting beneath the panels, ask about our solar panel bird proofing services.
How Much Does Professional Solar Panel Cleaning Cost?
PJ Solar’s standard cleaning is $150 for 1–15 panels and $10 per panel for more than 15 panels. Heavy buildup, overspray removal and applicable travel charges are quoted separately. See solar panel cleaning prices and request an estimate with your city and panel count.
